Thomas Worthington Whittredge was an American artist of the Hudson River School, who made a strong impression as an artist in his time and worked alongside other artists, including Albert Bierstadt and Sanford Robinson Gifford.

Whittredge was born near Springfield, Ohio in 1820. Whittredge was interested in painting from an early age. In Ohio, he would commute to Cincinnati to show his landscapes and portraits. In 1849, Whittredge travelled to Europe for more extensive exposure to the arts and studied at the Dusseldorf Academy in Germany where he met painter Emanuel Leutze. Whittredge posed for Leutze as a model in his renowned painting Washington Crossing the Delaware.

Whittredge remained in Europe for ten years before returning to the United States. He set up a studio in New York City and began to build his reputation as a painter of the Hudson River School. Whittredge continued to travel, venturing around westward in the United States. He completed epic paintings of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains.

Whittredge exhibited his masterful work frequently and guided other aspiring artists. He served as president of the National Academy of Design and was on the selection committee for both the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and the 1878 Paris Exposition.

Later moving to New Jersey in 1880, Whittredge continued to paint as long as possible. Whittredge’s paintings are in prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.
