Eduard Wiiralt was an Estonian artist born in the Saint Petersburg Governorate, a division of the Russian Empire from 1708 to 1927. Wiiralt moved to the Varangu estate, Estonia in 1909. Wiiralt studied sculpture in Tartu, Estonia with Anton Starkopf. During the Estonian War of Independence, Wiiralt relocated to Germany, where he continued his studies in Dresden.

Wiiralt eventually returned to Tartu, where he graduated from the Pallas Academy, with a focus on the graphic arts. Wiiralt is now remembered as one of Estonia’s greatest graphic artists. Wiiralt created a number of well-known etchings, such as “Põrgu” meaning Hell. Wiiralt’s etchings continue to sell as major auctions around the world.
