Johann Zoffany was a German-born painter, who spent most of his career in England. Zoffany’s paintings are now in major British collections, including the National Gallery in London and the Tate Gallery. Zoffany was born in Frankfurt, where he lived until studying sculpture with Melchior Paulus in Ellwangen during the 1740s.

In 1750, Zoffany moved to Rome to further his education and work under the sculptor, Agostino Masucci. Several years later in 1760, he moved north to England, where he found work with a clockmaker. Shortly after moving to England, Zoffany started working for King George III and Queen Charlotte.

By 1769, Zoffany became a founding member of the Royal Academy and received numerous portrait commissions from well-known figures in British society. Zoffany became a master of ‘conversation-piece’ genre, which consisted of family and friend portrait paining. Later in Zoffany’s life, he began painting large-scale paintings, filled with groups of people and works of art.

Zoffany remained in Britain for the remainder of his life, though he made frequent visits to continental Europe and beyond. The artist was buried at St. Anne’s Church, Kew in England. Zoffany’s work can now be found in major collections throughout Great Britain and around the world.
