Jourdan was a student and friend of Gaugin, and his style is a direct fusion of his master’s influence and Oriental technique. In his time, Jourdan was called a “painter of light.” His paintings starkly contrasted that of his contemporaries because he painted pastoral scenes of the Brittany landscape with a Japanese flair. Jourdan was also known for the elimination of detail in his paintings; an almost stripped-down style that was both minimalist and aesthetically pleasing.

In 1883, Jourdan traveled to Algeria, and also to Finland in 1895. Towards the turn of the century, Jourdan began to paint with a more Impressionistic hand.

He lived a bohemian lifestyle, as so many other painters of his time did, and traveled often, living in a number of places. Sadly, his bohemian lifestyle left him overcome by poverty and alcoholism and he died alone and abandoned in a retirement home in Quimperle.

Although his name today does not ring as familiar as his friend and teacher Gaugin, Jourdan left a distinct mark in art history.
