Charles-Edouard Boutibonne, Pest 1816 – Interlaken 1897, Hungarian school. He studied in Vienna under F. Ammerling, and in Paris under Deveria and Winterhalter. He painted much in Paris and his parents were French and for these reasons he is sometimes thought to belong to the French school of painting.
He was mostly a portraitist and a genre painter, both in oil and in pastel. In Paris he painted mostly the aristocracy and entourage of Napoleon III as well as the monarch himself.
He moved to London in 1854 where he soon was painting in Windsor including portraits of the Queen and Prince Consort.
By 1867 he was in Switzerland where he became a member of the Bern Association artistique. In 1885 he settled in Wilderswil, near Interlaken, where he would remain for the rest of his life.
In 1856 and 1857 he exhibited at the London Royal Academy.
His paintings are in many collections including of course the Bern Museum.
