Peder Severin Kroyer was a Norwegian-born Danish painter, and is considered to be one of the most famous “Painters of Light” during the 19th century.

Kroyer studied at the Copenhagen Academy of Arts where he established his ideals for creating compositions that showed a harmony between beauty and nature. Kroyer frequently visited Paris, where he was a student of Bonnat and became influenced by the work of the Impressionists, which further heightened his development of the use of light.

Kroyer visited Skagen in 1882, and returned their regularly thereafter during the summer to complete the major part of his works. Kroyer eventually became the leader of the colony of artists at Skagen.

During his lifetime, Kroyer was a fairly versatile artist and created many different types of art in many different mediums from sculpture to engraving and watercolor, and created portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. He was awarded many prestigious awards during his lifetime, and was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1888.

Today, many of Kroyer’s paintings are housed in the Museum of Copenhagen and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about a 19th century Danish painting in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by Peder Severin Kroyer.
