Miguel de Tovar was Spanish painter of the Baroque era, born in Higuera de la Sierra. In 1690 Miguel de Tovar moved to Seville to further initiate his painting studies. He was a great admirer of the artist, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, whose work he frequently copied. Murillo had a great deal of influence over his style and technique as a painter. Many of Tovar’s work, such as “La Immaculada” are attributed to Morillo. “La Immacullada” is now housed in the Cathedral of Cádiz.
Tovar began his career in Seville only painting religious pieces. Tovar received various commissions and gained experience, painting altars in Seville’s greatest cathedrals.
In 1729, Tovar began working for the Bourbon court of Seville, serving King Felipe V. As a court painter, Tovar collaborated with many other artists including Louis Michel van Loo. Tovar’s paintings were greatly influenced by the other court painters that he worked alongside.
Tovar was greatly successful as a court painter, and is recognized as one of the great masters of Seville during the Baroque period. Tovar is mostly recognized for his eloquent portraits of religious figures.
Tovar died in Madrid at the mature age of eighty. His paintings now belong to major Spanish and international collections. Do you think you own a painting by Alonso Miguel de Tovar? Contact us. We are the Tovar experts.
