Goitia was a realist painter from Fresnillo in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. Like many of the principal artists of Mexico, Goitia studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. After completing his studies in Mexico, Goitia travelled to Europe. Goitia’s work was greatly impacted by his studies in Spain and Italy. In 1904 Goitia studied under Francisco Galí in Barcelona, Spain. Goitia was later awarded a grant to work in Rome, Italy. In 1912, due to political changes, Goitia lost his grant and returned to Mexico.

During the Mexican Revolution, Goitia was the official painter for General Angel of Pancho Villa’s army. It is told that Goitia used executed soldiers as models in his paintings, hanging them in various positions.

In Goitia’s later life, he worked as a professor at The Academy of San Carlos and studied indigenous groups of Mexico. Goitia led a modest, solitary life in Xochimilco, Mexico drawn to the poverty of his surroundings. Goitia’s painting often depict poverty-stricken or morose environments.
