Cesáreo Bernaldo de Quirós (1881-1968)

ツ ツ

Born in Argentina, in the city of Gualeguay, Entre Ríos province, on May 27, 1881.

From a young age his love for painting began. At the age of 13 he entered the workshop of the Valencian Nicolau Cotanda and three years later he entered the Academy of the Stimulus Society of Fine Arts under the direction of teachers Angel Della Valle and Reynaldo Giúdice.

After receiving the Rome Prize and with only twenty years old, the Argentine government scholarships him to travel to Italy. There it is perfected and even receives a mention at the Venice Biennale in 1901 with the large-scale work “Back from Fishing”. In 1905 he traveled to Spain and contacted Zuloaga and Sorolla, then followed Paris, Florence and Sardinia.

He returned to his country in 1906. He joined the Nexus group and obtained the Grand Prize and Gold Medal at the Centennial International Art Exhibition (1910).

He travels again to Europe, where he stays for five years and performs some of his most beautiful works, both in Florence and in Mallorca. He returned to Argentina to settle in his hometown (1916-1927), where he produced a clearly gaucho work unprecedented in the figurative arts of Argentina. Under the title “Los gauchos” he exposes the result of his work, in 1927, in Los Amigos del Arte. With these paintings he will have to travel, later, Spain, the United States and Canada. Many of these works are vast canvases in which scenes and types of the entrerriano past are painted – gauchos, montoneros, patterns of stay – with a bombastic spirit and a conventionally idealizing vision.

From the strictly pictorial point of view, Quirós is a tributary of the realistic currents, literary in tone and a little theatrical, coming from Spain and Italy at the turn of the century. Estimable draftsman, he has energy, for works of great encouragement, of vast dimensions and his color, sometimes a little noisy, it fades and achieves happier harmonizations in smaller works, where he deals with subjects of lower aspirations.

Complete artist, he covered all genres: figures, landscapes, still lifes, allegorical works.

He was a professor at the National School of Decorative Arts and president of the National Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1942, he acquired a large tract of land over the ravines of the Paraná River, near the city of the same name, creating a museum with a vast collection of weapons, furniture, decorations and objects of great artistic value.

He obtained numerous distinctions in the country and abroad, his work being especially valued by national and foreign collectors.

The last years of his life he lived in Vicente López, in Buenos Aires, and died on May 29, l968.
