Francesco Hayez was a 19th century Italian Romantic painter, who was originally trained as a painting restorer. He came from a poor family and was the youngest of five sons. He was initially trained under Francisco Magiotto and was admitted to the New Academy of Fine Arts in 1806, where he studied under Teodoro Matteini.

In 1814, Hayez was living in Rome and later moved to Naples . While in Naples , he was commissioned by Joachim Murat to paint a major work which depicted Ulysses and the court of Alcinous.

He was a highly political history painter and participated in the political upheavals of 1848. He was named the director of the Academy of Brera in 1850. Hayez painted portraits from 1823-1848, and his later works showed the influence of the Classical revival.

Art historians and researchers have discovered that Hayez generally did not date or sign his works. The only evidence that researchers have of the age of his paintings are generally based on when they were initially sold by the artist, and not by when the artist created them. So the age of most of Hayez’s paintings are not approximate. In addition, Hayez was known to create the same composition several times, making almost exact duplicates of the same paintings. Therefore, one may have an original painting by Hayez and not know it, thinking that it is a copy!

Today, Hayez’s work is housed all over the world, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about a 19 th century Italian Romantic painting in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by Francesco Hayez.
