Aron of Kangeq (1822–1869)

ツ ツ

While little information is printed on Kangeq in English, his paintings and prints are highly cherished by both Greenlandic and international collectors. His images are also commonly used to illustrate articles pertaining to Inuit history in Greenland.

Kangeq’s prints sometimes show violent battles between the Inuit people and the Danish colonizers. In “Qasapi has just killed a Norsemen chief Uungortoq” an Inuit man is proudly holding a severed limb as a trophy. The Norsemen is seen defeated on the ground.

Beyond the more politically minded prints, Kangeq also showed daily rituals. As a hunter, he showed the process of handling meat and hydes.
