McEntee was an American painter of the Hudson River School born in Rondout, New York. McEntee left behind detailed writings that describe the everyday life of the Hudson River School members. McEntee’s journals now belong to the Smithsonian Institute Archives. Many of McEntee’s writings have also been published on the internet.
Few details are known of McEntee’s childhood in Rondout. As a young adult McEntee moved to New York City in order to pursue a career as a painter. McEntee first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1850. McEntee studied under Frederic Edwin Church, affording him the opportunity to befriend other painters such as Sanford Robinson Gifford and Worthington Whittredge.
McEntee’s paintings are particularly forlorn and dramatic, often depicting the foreboding weather of autumn. Like the other artists of the Hudson River School, McEntee had a spiritual relationship with nature and cherished his time in natural beauty.
