ツ ツ

Gustave Charles Bacarisas was a Gibraltar born artist, active in the late 19th and early 20th century. Bacarisas travelled extensively, painting in Italy, England, Argentina and Morocco before settling in Seville around 1915. In Seville Bacarisas established his own studio, which was visited by the Queen Victoria of Spain. Bacarisas proceeded to be awarded with gold medals and received commissions for esteemed projects, such as a design for the Royal Pavilion in Seville. In Bacarisas’s later life he continued his travels in England and Spain, fulfilling design commissions in London and Madrid.

Bacarisas’s paintings reflect his great love for travel. He painted numerous landscapes, portraits and historical scenes. More than any other subject matter, he painted scenes and people from his adopted home, Seville.

Bacarisas’s style ranged from traditional, European oil painting to decorative and graphic designs. It seems hi was highly influenced with the landscapes and cultures of his surroundings. He made more colorful work in Gibraltar and Argentina, and more muted work in London or Madrid.

Today, Bacarisas is remembered as one of Gibraltar’s greatest artists.
