Gojkio Berkuljan was a Montenegrin painter known for his rebellious style, acting as a departure from socialist realism. Berkuljan studied in Herceg Novi’s School of Art. He had a traditional art education, copying frescoes in the region.

After completing his education he co-founded the artist group “Trojica.” In addition to his contribution to painting in Montenegro, Berkuljian did scene painting for the theatre and helped create the Museum of Theatre in Cetinje.

Many of Berkuljian’s painting are housed in the Art Museum of Montenegro in Cetinje. Other works are part of private collections around the world. His earlier works are notably more traditional portraits and landscape paintings, depicting scenes from his country. Berkuljan’s later work is notably more abstract, experimenting with loose brush strokes, geometry and textured application of paint.

Berkuljian generally painted with oil paint on canvas, board or wood. In addition to his completed paintings he made a number of pencil and pastel sketches.
