David Howard Hitchcock was an American painter born in Hilo, Hawaii. Hitchcock is known for his realistic landscape paintings of the Hawaiian Islands. Hitchcock lived in Hilo, Hawaii for most of his childhood, growing up around volcanoes and beaches.

Hitchcock was interested in art from an early age and took drawing courses at the Punahou School in Honolulu. Hitchcock left the islands to attend Oberlin College in Ohio and California School of Design in San Francisco. Hitchcock returned to Hawaii for only a short while before continuing his studies in Paris for three years. Hitchcock received personal training form the talented artist, Jules Tavernier.

Hitchcock returned from Paris and set up a studio in Honolulu, Hawaii, making periodic trips to San Francisco. Hitchcock quickly became the most popular and respected artist in Hawaii. Hitchcock founded the Kilohana Art League and became the president of the Honolulu Art Association. Hitchcock often exhibited on both Hawaii and on the mainland. Hitchcock’s major exhibits included the Golden Gate International Exhibition of 1939-40 and the Panama-California Exhibition in San Diego in 1915.

Hitchcock took many painting trips around the islands, exploring volcanic regions, Kauai, Waimea Canyon and Maui. Hitchcock was a passionate member of Hawaii’s Volcano School. Hitchcock also painted many murals in Honolulu. Hitchcock’s work is now in important collections including the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, the Honolulu Academy of the Arts, the Oakland Museum and the Boston Museum.
