There is only one authentic portrait of Johannes Kepler in existence. The German astronomer was born in 1571 and died in 1630. His most significant contribution to science was his three laws of planetary motion.
According to Steven N. Shore and Vaclav Pavlik this portrait was probably painted in the early 1800s. It features Kepler in period clothing holding a pair of forceps in his right hand.
There is one post mortem portrait of Kepler that needs to be mentioned. This portrait was engraved by artist Frederick Mackenzie (1787-1854).
It is likely that additional authentic portraits of Kepler exist to this day. Still wondering about a portrait in your family collection? Contact us... it may be a portrait of Johannes Kepler.
