François-Guillaume Menageot was an 18th century French painter. Menageot was the son of an art dealer, and he studied under François Boucher. He won the Prix de Rome in 1766 and studied at the Academie de France in Rome from 1769-1774.

Menageot was mainly a history painter, and his Neoclassical compositions were well-received during his lifetime. He embraced the principles of the “Grand Style,” and gravitated towards traditional horizontal compositions, featuring monumental architecture and cool colors.

Today, Menageot’s Neoclassical history paintings are housed in public and private collections around the world, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about an 18th century French painting in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by François-Guillaume Menageot.
