Ellinor Aiki was an Estonian artist born, Ellinor Blumenfeldt, in the small borough of Tōstamaa. Aiki changed her surname in 1935, after she started studying art and design. Aiki had a difficult childhood due to a severe injury and tuberculosis. After high school Aiki delayed pursuing higher education because of severe pain. Aiki briefly worked in a hospital and as a teacher before enrolling in an art program.
Aiki finally completed her degree at the age of forty-three. In her years as a student she studied etching, lithography, monotyping and painting. Aiki became a member of the Estonian Artists’ Cooperative and worked at the Tartu Artists’ Bureau until the Soviet occupation of Estonia.
For several years Soviet authorities censored painting in Estonia, which deterred Aiki from making a large number of works. When the restrictions were loosened in 1957, Aiki began painting much brighter and more playful paintings. Aiki often painted portraits, still life paintings and city scenes with fantastical colors or elements.
Throughout her career, Aiki painted hundred of works. If you think you may own original artwork by Ellinor Aiki, contact Art Experts for information regarding our services.
