Emile Claus was a Belgian painter, known creating his own style of Impressionism known as “Luminism.” He was influenced by Claude Monet, and created this “luminous” style by using lighting techniques. One of the best examples of this luminous style can be seen in his painting “Sun in Winter, Mid Day” 1902.

Despite the fact that Claus was very talented in recreating his own style of French Impressionism, he was not warmly received at home in Belgium. Foreign critics, however, praised him quite highly during his career, making him more popular among the progressive crowd.

During World War I, Claus lived in London and kept a studio there, all the while staying out of fashionable circles. Despite the fact that he did not mingle with the art crowd, he still managed to show his work prominently in numerous contemporary exhibits.

Claus traveled often during his lifetime, and painted often in France and Italy, as well as in England and Belgium. His oeuvre consists of a vast array of subjects from peasants and country folk working in the fields to portraits of elegant ladies, city scenes, harbor scenes and landscapes. His work is very reminiscent of that of his mentor Claude Monet, in subject and in style. For example, his painting “Sunset Over the Waterloo Bridge” 1916, is quite similar to Monet’s sunset scenes, such as “London, Houses of Parliament at Sunset.”

For that reason, it is very possible that paintings, thought to be by Monet and otherwise rejected, may in fact be by Claus.

Today, Claus’s paintings are housed all over the world, in San Francisco, Odessa, Brussels, and France and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about a Belgian, French, English or Italian Impressionist painting in your family estate? Contact us…it could be by Emile Claus.
