Emmanuel de La Villeon (1858-1944)

ツ ツ

Emmanuel de La Villeon was a French Impressionist painter born in Fougeres. He arrived in Paris in 1880 to pursue his painting career, and became associated with the French School style of painting. He would become well known for his tranquil landscapes and seascapes, and held his first exhibition at The Salon des Independents in 1888.

La Villeon continued painting right up until his death at age 86. It is said that he was one of the last true Impressionist painters of the era, and while he is little known outside of France today, remains an important representative of this movement.

Today, La Villeon’s work is housed all over France, most of which are in the Musee Emmanuel de La Villeon in his home town of Fougeres. There are nearly 100 paintings, drawings and watercolors of his housed at his museum, and perhaps one in your own home.
