Anton Raphael Mengs was an 18th century German painter. He studied under his father in Dresden and Rome, and was influenced early on by the works of the Italian Renaissance painters. Some art historians have said that Mengs was considered to be the greatest living painter of his day.
Mengs was named the court painter for the Elector of Saxony, Augustus II in the 1750’s. While working for the Saxon court, Mengs painted a number of large portraits for the nobility.
During the height of Mengs’ popularity, he was still highly influence by the Baroque in his religious paintings. However, Mengs was also working at the same time to bring Neoclassical elements into his art and the art world.
Mengs also spent many years as the court painter to Charles III of Spain, and decorated many rooms in the Royal Palace in Madrid, as well as at the Vatican.
