Jean-Baptiste Perroneau was an 18th century Parisian painter, renowned for his pastel portraits. He initially was an engraver, but in 1744, switched to primarily oils and pastels. He exhibited his work for the first time at the Salons in 1746 and became a member of the Academie Royale in 1753. Perroneau continued to exhibit at the Salons until 1779.

During his career, Perroneau held a rivalry with fellow portraitist Maurice-Quentin de la Tour, and this rivalry came to a head around 1750, the same year that he painted a portrait of his rival. In 1755, Perroneau began to travel extensively, first to Spain, then Hamburg, as well as Italy, Russia, England, Amsterdam and Poland, where he died.

Perroneau was all but forgotten during the 19th century, but interest in his work has since resurged. Today, Perroneau’s work is housed in museums all over the world, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about an 18th century European portrait in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by Jean-Baptiste Perroneau.
