William Lockhart Bogle was born in Scotland in 1860. Bogle worked throughout the United Kingdom and Europe as a highly recognized portrait and genre painter. Bogle became interested in painting at a young age and decided to pursue an academic education in painting. Bogle first studied in Dusseldorf, Germany from 1881 to 1883. Bogle spent his fourth year of study in Glasgow, Scotland, a city with a strong history of fine artists. Bogle slowly made his way to London, first moving to near-by Bushey and then to London in 1887.

Bogle made a living for many years an illustrator, working for newspaper, magazine and book publishers. Bogle commonly illustrated important names in business and finance.

Bogle had considerable success as a portrait painter. Bogle was commissioned to paint Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, which belongs to the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Bogle exhibited frequently in esteemed venues including the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and many galleries in the United Kingdom. Beagle’s portraits were greatly influenced by his studies in Dusseldorf and contained Victorian stylistic qualities. As the Victorian style faded from popularity, Bogle was able to adapt his painting technique to accommodate the changing times. Bogle made a number of strong genre pieces, including “Reading to Grandfather”, which expresses powerful emotions of everyday life.

Bogle’s paintings are in museums and private collections throughout Europe and the United States. Bogle’s pieces continue to rise in value and are sought after by important collectors internationally. Do you think you own a painting by William Lockhart Bogle? Contact us.
