Oskar Hoffmann was a Baltic German painter born in Tartu, Estonia. As a young man, Hoffmann worked as a printmaker, producing lithographs and photographs. By the 1870s, Hoffmann began exhibiting his own work. Hoffmann decided to receive formal training in Germany at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf. Hoffmann apprenticed under Gregor von Bochmann and Eugen Dücker.

Hoffmann eventually opened his own studio in Düsseldorf where he painted a number of oil portraits as well as etchings. Due to financial struggles the studio was not open for long, but Hoffmann’s reputation did not suffer. Hoffmann soon became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, which led to a number of exhibitions in Russia, Germany and Austria.

While Hoffmann died in St. Petersburg, his legacy remains as a great painter of Estonia. Hoffmann’s favored subject matter was Estonian peasants, rendered both as individual portraits as well as genre scenes. In addition to having a large number of paintings in the collection of the Art Museum of Estonia, Hoffmann’s paintings are often sold at auctions internationally.
