Emiliano di Cavalacanti was a Brazilian painter. He was born in Rio de Janeiro and moved to São Paulo in 1917. Though São Paulo was a less artistic city than Rio de Janeiro at the time, di Cavalcanti became involved in the art scene just the same. Along with a number of other young artists, he became one of the “Group of Five,” and with Mario de Andrade, spearheaded “Modernismo.” The group also organized “The Week of Modern Art” in February of 1922, which historically marked Brazilian Modernism.

While living in Paris from 1923-1925, di Cavalcanti was exposed to the European modernist, not least of all Pablo Picasso. His work is a clear mixture of Brazilian themes, mostly featuring mulatto women, as well as chic European styling.

Shortly after his visit to Paris, di Cavalcanti returned to Brazil and settled in Rio de Janeiro. He spent the rest of his life alternating between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and showed his work there often. Di Cavalcanti was considered to be the most popular Brazilian artist by the 1950’s, and had prominent exhibitions in 1951 and 1953 at the São Paulo Biennial exhibitions.

Today di Cavalcanti’s work is housed in modern art museums all over the world, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about a Brazilian modernist painting in your family estate? Contact us…it could be by Emiliano di Cavalcanti.
