Colin Campbell Cooper Jr. was an American Impressionist painter born in Philadelphia. Cooper studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and later at Academie Julian in Paris. Cooper returned to Philadelphia from Europe and taught at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry.

Cooper married another artist named Emma Lampert and moved to New York City. Cooper was greatly inspired by the urban landscape and started making paintings of skyscrapers. Cooper was apart of the New York art scene and a member of the National Academy of Design.

When Cooper’s first wife died in 1920, he moved to Santa Barbara, California and became dean of the Santa Barbara School of Arts. Cooper had several exhibitions in California including the San Diego Museum of Art, the Laguna Art Museum and the Santa Barbara Museum. Cooper remarried and remained in California for the rest of his life.

Cooper’s paintings have been exhibited in prestigious museums across the United States such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Museum of Art , the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the City Art Museum of St. Louis, the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, New York and the Cleveland Museum.
