Lazar Krestin was a Lithuanian artist born in Kaunas. Krestin began his artistic training in Vilnius before attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Munich. Krestin’s most influential teacher was Isidor Kaufmann, a well-known Austro-Hungarian painter. Like Kaufmann, Krestin became known for painting Jewish themes and portraits.

In 1910, Krestin moved to Jerusalem after receiving an invitation form the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Krestin became a recognized Zionist. Some of his beliefs may have stemmed from his father who was a Talmud teacher

Krestin eventually returned to Vienna, where he spent the last years of his life. His paitings continue to sell at major auctions around the world.
