Lydia Mei was an Estonian artist, known for her watercolor and still-life paintings. Mei was born on Hiiumaa, an Estonian island in the Baltic Sea. Mei came from an artistic family, with three sisters who all became prominent Estonian artists. The Mei sisters built public profiles during the New Objectivity in Estonia, which countered Expressionism.

Mei began her training in architecture, taking courses at the Petrograd Women’s Polytechnic Institute. After finishing her studies in 1918, Mei concentrated on painting. In the 1920s, Mei built a portfolio of watercolor paintings.

In addition to having artistic sisters, Mei married a fellow artist, Anton Starkopf in 1928. Starkopf was a reputable Estonian sculptor. After Mei’s marriage she remained active, painting flower bouquets and other household objects.

Mei’s still life and watercolor paintings are now in major collections and museums in Estonia and around the world. If you think you may own original artwork by Lydia Mei, contact Art Experts for information regarding our services.
