Joseph Urbania was a Slovenian sculptor born in the city of Ljubljana. Urbania began his studies under Josip Groselj, the heir to the renowned Zajec workshop. Zajec’s influence is often noted in Urbania’s work.
As a young man, Urbania was enlisted in the Slovenian Army, where he was commissioned to create a large sculpture titled, “Homeland.” Urbania completed the work, which was exhibited in 1903.
