Anton von Maron was an 18th century Austrian painter. He studied at the academy in Vienna and in 1755 he traveled to Rome, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.

Von Maron was the first pupil and then the assistant of master painter Anton Raphael Mengs. He married the artists’ sister in 1765, a miniaturist painter named Theresia Concordia Mengs. As a result of their close relationship, von Maron and Mengs often collaborated on frescoes and paintings together.

In 1761, von Maron was appointed court painter to Charles III of Spain and left for Madrid. However, once he returned to Rome, von Maron was quickly established as the most popular painter in the region, and took many commissions away from his master, Mengs.

Towards the later half of the 18th century, von Maron was in high demand as a portrait painter, and in the grand tradition of fellow painter Pompeo Batoni, made a very good living painting the portraits of vacationing English gentlemen.

Today, von Maron’s paintings are housed in prestigious collections throughout the world, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about an 18th century Italian painting in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by Anton von Maron.
