Jacobo Azagury was a Gibraltar born artist. In his younger years he studied in Madrid at the Real Academia San Fernando. Despite his academic training and love of the masters, he adopted a more expressionist style. Azagury was forever distressed by poverty and inequality, which he expressed by painting with a muted palette.

In addition to Azagury’s oil paintings he made numerous ink sketches, mainly portraits. Hundreds of Azagury’s sketches were recently exhibited in the Gibraltar Garrison Library.
