By 1851 Makovsky enrolled at the Moscow School, where he excelled under the instruction of ÐœM.I. Skotty, A.N. Mokritsky, S.K. Zaryanko.

After several years of study in Moscow, Makovsky enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, participating in several exhibitions. In 1870 Makovsky helped to found the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions and went on painting expeditions in Serbia and Egypt. Makovsky continued to exhibit his genre and historical paintings, depicting life in Russia.

In 1889 Makovsky won the Large Gold Medal at the World’s Fair in Paris, bringing him more fame and fortune than any other Russian artist at the time. Makovsky’s style of Russian Impressionism had wide spread appeal to collectors and exhibitors.
