Richard Cosway was an 18th century English painter. Cosway typically painted miniature paintings and portraits in the Rococo style, and became famous for his depictions of fashionable people of his era. Though he was best known for his miniatures, Cosway also created a number of sketches as well.

Cosway’s work can be characterizes by his short and quick brush strokes, and by his technique of placing his subjects on a light background so that they stand out. Cosway also utilized the ivory on which he painted his miniatures by using only light washes of color so that the brilliance of the ivory underneath could shine through.
